Do One Thing Uniquely Well

A forcing function for excellence

Hello to every unicorn in the galaxy.

When I went to Yale, I thought everyone was smarter than me.

My peers were:

  • Entrepreneurs

  • Playwrights

  • Scientists

  • Authors

In hindsight, their accomplishments were a measure of focused curiosity, rather than raw intelligence.

What many of them had achieved was to get really good at a single skill.

This brings me to today’s unicorn growth insight:

“Do one thing uniquely well.”

Do One Thing Uniquely Well

There’s a lot of room for mediocrity in the world.

And you don’t need to be original to be wealthy.

Yet this phrase is a powerful forcing function:

What is the one thing you (will) do uniquely well?

What must you do now to ensure that you do it uniquely well?

What are you spending time on that isn’t bringing you closer to this goal?

Thiel was thinking about monopolies like Google when he said this.

But it’s a useful lens for making almost anything better.

Is this idea valuable to you?
